                        Getting started

Madrid at night

Come and visit some pubs and bars where you can start your night on the town

Stylish, well-established and surprising places, all ready for you to have a wonderful time with your friends.

If you would like to enjoy traditional, economical cuisine, you can always go to spots that are highly regarded by young people. Many of these are in the Malasaña neighbourhood, in the streets that lead into Dos de Mayo Square. In the Sol and Huertas areas, there are places with a traditional flavour, and you can find the most popular bars in the vicinity of the Gran Vía.

A classic

One of the most charismatic spots is located at Gran Vía, 12. This is the Chicote Museum, which has been open since 1931 and has played host to the cream of society, as well as such Hollywood stars as Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Lana Turner, Gary Cooper, Orson Wells and Yul Brynner. If you would like to follow their lead, this legendary bar is the place to begin.

You can also make a stop at Inpass, located at Tres Cruces, 8. It offers milk shakes and fresh juices, cocktails (with or without alcohol); coffees and a special menu of tisanes and infusions. It has not been open for very long, but it has already found its niche in Madrid's nightlife.

Nearby, at Caballero de Gracia, 10, is a magical spot called Costello. Café & Nite Club. It shares premises with the restaurant La gloria de Montera and has three different areas to suit every taste: whether you want to start the night off with a bang or are looking for something a little quieter, this is the place for you. It also has top DJs after 6pm.

One place that cannot be missed in the Huertas area is La tapería de la Tía Cebolla, an establishment where you can try the best Spanish wines accompanied by gastronomic specialities like croquettes and the popular "Don Paco", consisting of bread topped with ham shoulder, tomato and cheese and browned in the oven.

If you are not very hungry and you do not mind paying a bit more for cocktail bar service, you need only book a table at strong>East 47, which belongs to the Hotel Villa Real in Plaza de las Cortes Square. A pleasant décor to accompany a wide variety of food items.

Food and drink

Do you prefer the taste of Mexican food or the Creole cuisine of New Orleans? There is no need to limit yourself, as you can enjoy these and other specialities on different days: variety reigns supreme in the Malasaña, Conde Duque and Fuencarral areas. Before getting down to serious business, stop by Carajillo (San Bernardo, 73); where you can sample tostas, toasted baguette slices with different toppings, and other appetizers, washed down with the customary drink.

Las Mañanitas (Fuencarral, 82); Chilango (Manuela Malasaña, 12) and La Taquería de Birra (Plaza de las Comendadoras, 2) offer a variety of Central American drinks and 100% Mexican tacos. At Gumbo (Pez, 15); you can discover the secrets of the cuisine of New Orleans, one of the most unique cities in the Southern United States, famous for its fried green tomatoes and other specialities.
