It is said that Madrid has always been fortified, surrounded by a great wall that ran along the Manzanares Valley and the Sierra de Guadarrama. Given its geographical location was a very interesting city, why suffered from many attacks to conquer.
In one of these attacks by Christians, in May 1085, it was possible to besiege the city, but failed to get through the wall.
Legend has it that a young soldier in the army of the king managed to climb the wall with an invaluable skill, before the astonished gaze of his companions, and exclaimed at what he saw: "looks like a cat!". It was Madrid and was conquered by the Christians.
Therefore, in honor of such a feat accomplished by the young warrior, the locals are known as "cats".
